SPRING PILGRIMAGE: THE GARDENS CIRCA 1794

The Gardens served as a military hospital for Federal troops during 1863-1864. Folding doors provide access to the main parlor, hallway, and dining room. The large elliptical archway in the hall has a pilaster treatment similar to that on the interior of the entrance doorways. Walks are home-burned brick, the same type used in the foundations of the home, chimneys, former outside kitchen, and brick court at the rear of the home.

  • Built on a land grant from the Spanish Crown
  • Hinges, knobs, and key plates are brass
  • Windows contain panes of hand-blown glass
  • Part of the acreage was sold to the United States to develop the Natchez National Cemetery
  • Featured on HGTV’s “Homes Across America” in 1999
